FIFA counts down to the World Cup 2026 with a daily statistical story.
Brazil bagged 19 goals in six games en route to glory at Mexico 1970. The only team to register more during a triumphant World Cup campaign West Germany, who hit 25 at Switzerland 1954. Spain scored the fewest for a title-winning side with eight in seven matches at South Africa 2010.
The Seleção players netting the most goals at the ninth World Cup were Jairzinho (7 goals), Pele (4), Rivellino (3) and Tostao (2).
Eleven of Brazil’s goals came in their three knockout games, with Mario Zagallo’s men beating Peru 4-2, Uruguay 3-1 and Italy 4-1. The latter, capped by Carlos Alberto’s glorious goal, shares the record for the biggest victory in a final.
Brazil’s class of ’70 was quickly christened ‘The Beautiful Team’.
